    Hồ Hoàn Kiếm - or Hoan Kiem Lake, at its prettiest for the celebration of Tet, Lunar New Year, in Hanoi, Vietnam. According to the legend, Emperor Lê Lợi handed a magic sword called Heaven's Will which brought him victory in his revolt against the Chinese Ming Dynasty back to the Golden Turtle God (Kim Qui) in the Lake and hence gave it its present name, "Lake of the Returned Sword" or "Lake of the Restored Sword." (Thanks, Wikipedia!)

    We went for a two and a half hour cruise in a long boat with a cover that shaded us from the sun. Just motoring and taking pictures and waving at folks as we passed by. It is all done but the sunset pictures (of which there are many!)

    Private enterprise is alive and well in Luang Prabang, in the People's Republic of Lao, where this Bamboo Bridge, which was our route to "metropolitan" Luang Prabang from our My Dream Boutique Resort, across the Nam Khan River, is maintained by a Laotian family, which collects tolls so that they can rebuild the bridge every year after the rainy season, when it goes out.
