Lunar New Year in Hanoi, Vietnam, 1/22/12 (5)
Hồ Hoàn Kiếm - or Hoan Kiem Lake, at its prettiest for the celebration of Tet, Lunar New Year, in Hanoi, Vietnam. According to the legend, Emperor Lê Lợi handed a magic sword called Heaven's Will which brought him victory in his revolt against the Chinese Ming Dynasty back to the Golden Turtle God (Kim Qui) in the Lake and hence gave it its present name, "Lake of the Returned Sword" or "Lake of the Restored Sword." (Thanks, Wikipedia!) -

A very special day for several of us who were visiting Daniel. We got to see the Temple from the perspective of someone who really knows the history of Vietnam and could tell us all sorts of stories about the Temple and its grounds. Thanks for the memories, Daniel! -

A cruise along the Mekong River, Luang Prabang and village, Lao, 1/15/12 (15)
We went for a two and a half hour cruise in a long boat with a cover that shaded us from the sun. Just motoring and taking pictures and waving at folks as we passed by. It is all done but the sunset pictures (of which there are many!) -

Private enterprise is alive and well in Luang Prabang, in the People's Republic of Lao, where this Bamboo Bridge, which was our route to "metropolitan" Luang Prabang from our My Dream Boutique Resort, across the Nam Khan River, is maintained by a Laotian family, which collects tolls so that they can rebuild the bridge every year after the rainy season, when it goes out. -

A very generous guy, Steve, gave Shirl rides to meetings on his motorcycle half the days Shirl and Rowan were in Chiang Mai. Very exciting! -

One of our favorite caravan parks, Denman Van Village! Rowan gets to barbecue, we get a private bathroom (!), we meet friendly and helpful caravan park owners, and we start getting used to Ubi, our campervan and home for the next two months. -
